How it all started

We have always wanted a little girl. 

To share my clothes with, to inherit my handbags and to giggle with.

And (horrors for some mommies) someone to match attire with!

Our first-born is a boy, sent from heaven.

He is the perfect baby.

He sits still to figure out electronic devices.

He counts numerals backwards at the age of 25 months

He even stands still with his hands by his side when sent to the naughty corner.

But we still hoped for a little girl.

We were blessed with another baby within 15 months of having the lovely boy.

One look at Sophie and we fell in love instantly.

But we also started to have a nudging suspicion that Sophie may not be the giggly type.

She is never still.

Her first words were: "iPad" and "NONONO"

She did not even need to figure out to know how to operate the home printer.

(Something the boy is still trying to get her to teach him)

Sophie yanks off accessories with a vengeance.

Hats, hair clips, sunglasses, you name it.

At 30ish, I was willing to compromise my style and accommodate her.

But I always ended up being the ridiculous one wearing gingham clippies - on my own.

All my hopes of wearing matching accessories were dashed.

After I quit my full-time position as a design-lecturer,

I started revisiting a stash of sample designs created for a range of children wear.

I found strands of freshwater pearls, which I had previously designed.

Took me months finding the correct pearl size with the perfect filigree clasp to match.

I left the project hanging as I could not decide between

12" or 14"

The samples dated 2010.

I had no kids then to figure out which was the perfect fit.

I designed it on a hunch. I designed it imagining what I would like if I had a little girl.

I felt then that no little girl deserved anything less than the classics:

Whenever I cleared out the cupboards, these little treasures always stayed.

They are little keepsakes too precious to go.

On a whim I put the 12" on little Sophie.

She gnawed at it, she tugged at it, but she did not yank it.

That's a good sign.

Miraculously, the 14" fits me.

It was not uncomfortable even though I am a size M

Because of the little pearls, it is not too "momsy" or "dressy"

Hence the creation of Pearls Like Mommy's™

I wear my pearls now almost everyday, from day through to night.

I am glad I stuck to the classics - because I really look dreadful in plastic beads and sparkles.

Sophie wears hers occasionally - and best part is it stays on!

She wears her pearls to weddings, birthday parties, with her jeans and sometimes to bed.

So now, I can:

1. Match with our little girl

2. Keep my style

3. Tell other lovely mommies: "It works"
